Helen Roy

Ojibwe Language Teacher, Singer, Translator, Ojibwe Language Consultant, Author, Public Speaker, Emcee

I am from  Wikwemikong Unceded Reserve on Manitoulin Island, Canada.  I currently reside in Michigan and teach Ojibwe language at Michigan State University.  I have been teaching now for over 25 years.  Growing up on Manitoulin, my family and I always spoke only in our language.  With our native languages slowly being lost over the years, I was one of the few fortunate ones to have been able to maintain and speak my language, Odawa/Ojibwe.

Recently, The Story with Dick Gordon replied to a suggestion that they interview me.  The person who contacted us said:  “Can you refer me to any article or bios that tell me more details about her personal experience and why keeping her language alive is so important to her?  If not, can you tell me what you know to be some of the important moments in her life that have helped shape her feelings on language revitalization?”
